Berlin New York in Babylon

Berlin New York in Babylon

Hello New Yorkophiles,

We, M:Soundtrack and Babylon Cinema have started a series in Berlin to continue and strengthen the already well traveled bridge from artists back and forth between Berlin & New York since the beginning of the last century. We are BRINGING New York artists to your doorstep some write* some sing* some song* some fill our aesthetic desires and others show us worlds we only heard about….

So far we have found oursleves talking with Paul Auster and spending a few hours with his muses, being inspired by Arthur Russell through Matt Wolf and inspiring others to interpret his genius, learning again from Brent Green what hand work is all about and the downside of coughsyrup with a soundtrack made with friend Jim Becker from the band Califone, Listening to life stories and history lessons experienced through Gerda’s (Schweigen) eyes and written down with Knut Elstermans hands, and recently hearing what NYC avantgarde sounds like today as well as a glimpse of yesterday with Mark Ribot.

which brings us to Friday March 13th @ 8 p.m. where we will once again be inspired, but this time from a 15 year old American Teenager namd Billy.

“I’m not black, I’m not white, not foreign… just different in the mind – different brains, that’s all…”  – Billy

We have invited Jennifer Venditti to Berlin on Friday, March 13th to screen the Berlin Premiere of her award wining documentary “Billy the Kid” and discuss the film following the screening.

Jennifer Venditti’s debut film is a provocative coming-of-age story, an odyssey into the soul of an American teenager. Following Billy as he bicycles through the quiet streets of small town Maine, we watch him traverse the frustrating gap between imagination and reality, grappling with isolation and first-time young love. By turns exhilarating and disturbing, we see the world from the intimate view of an expressive and seemingly fearless outsider.

Jennifer Venditti , Director/Producer
Named one of Filmmaker Magazine’s “Top 25 New Faces in Film,” Jennifer Venditti makes her directorial debut with the award-winning documentary BILLY THE KID. Venditti started her New York City-based casting agency JV8INC in 1998. Traveling all over the world, street-scouting real people for advertising, fashion and film, she discovers an inspired repertoire of diverse talent otherwise ignored by traditional casting methods. Photographers Richard Avedon and Bruce Weber and director Spike Jonze are just a few collaborators who have been excited by her singular aesthetic. It is her interest in finding the beauty in everyday heroes that provided her natural transition into filmmaking. While casting Carter Smith’s short film BUGCRUSH (Sundance Short Film Winner 2006) in a rural Maine high school, Venditti discovered Billy Price  whose unique and winning character inspired her feature documentary.
